Making of Vera

Ich bin immer von Anfang an bemüht, dass die Bilder, die ich male, in jedem Stadium präsentabel sind, das heißt, dass ich jederzeit sagen könnte: Ich höre auf, das Bild ist fertig.  Wie gesagt, ich bin bemüht, aber das klappt nicht immer. Mitunter sehen die Bilder zum Fürchten aus und es bedarf schon einer großen Portion Fantasie, daran zu glauben, dass noch etwas aus dem Bild wird. So war das auch im Anfangsstadium von Vera:

I always try from the beginning that the pictures I paint are presentable at every stage, which means that I could always say: I stop, the picture is finished. As I said, I try hard, but that does not always work. Sometimes the pictures look dreadful in early stages and it takes a lot of imagination to believe that they will work out. That was so in the early stages of Vera:

Die Schattenpartien sind stellenweise viel zu dunkel und die Proportionen stimmen nicht. Das wird auch im nächsten Stadium nicht wesentlich besser.

The shadow parts are in places much too dark and the proportions are not right. This is not much better in the next stage.

So langsam taste ich mich heran. Mit den Proportionen bin ich zufrieden und auch die Tonwerte scheinen zu stimmen:

Um die Tonwerte zu überprüfen bediene ich mich eines kleinen Tricks. Ich füge über allen Ebenen eine weiter Ebene hinzu, die ich mit schwarz fülle. Das Montageverfahren der Ebene setze ich auf Kolorieren. Durch einblenden der Ebene kann ich immer wieder das Bild in Grauwerten betrachten. So lassen sich die Tonwerte leichter beurteilen.

To check the tonal values, I use a trick. I add a layer on top of the layer stack and fill it with black. The blend mode of the layer I set to colorize. So I can always look at the picture in gray scale. This makes it easier to judge the tonal values.

Jetzt geht es darum, die Farbtemperaturen und die Gesichtszüge zu verfeinern.

Now it's about refining color temperatures and facial features.
